At Independence House Academy, our leadership team is passionate about creating a supportive and empowering environment for young adults. With diverse expertise and a shared commitment to our mission, our team is dedicated to helping individuals achieve their fullest potential

Founder, Visionary and Owner 

Shep is the driving force behind Independence House Academy. Inspired by his daughter Lila, and a desire to create a nurturing space for young adults with disabilities, Shep who is also the Director of the successful Summit Camp and Travel which is a summer camp for neurodiverse children. Shep leads the academy with a deep understanding of the unique needs of the population we serve. When not at the IHA or Summit Camp, Shep enjoys spending time with, his wife Amanda and their two  children Chase and Lila, along with watching the New York Giants. 

CEO 

Laura Ryan is a qualified Social Care Worker from Ireland with over a decade of experience working with neurodiverse young adults in residential settings. Her extensive background in fostering independence, promoting personal growth, and supporting life skills development makes her an invaluable leader at Independence House Academy. Laura will oversee IHA’s programs to ensure they are aligned with our mission and meet the highest standards of care and support. She is deeply committed to creating an environment where every individual feels empowered, valued, and capable of achieving their goals. When not at the IHA, Laura enjoys reading and spending time with her newfoundland, Nutini. 

Director of Residential Life

Rebecca who has a BA in Special Education and Rehabilitation service she feels passionately about supporting neurodiverse young adults reach their independent living goals in a structured, nurturing and supportive environment. Rebecca has extensive experience working with this population, including working as the management team that oversaw the Center Program at Summit Camp for the past 3 years. Rebecca also has experience working in inclusion and high support classrooms. When not at the IHA, Rebecca enjoys travelling and spending time with her friends.
