Welcome to Independence House Academy! We’re excited to help you begin your journey toward joining our supportive and empowering community. Below, you’ll find all the information you need to apply to our program and take the first steps toward a brighter future.

Who We Serve 

Independence House Academy is designed for young adults with: 

  • Diagnosed language, learning and cognitive disabilities
  • Responds well to a structured, supportive and predictable environment. 
  • Struggles socially with their peers and needs support in friendship circles.
  • Actively wants to participate in their own growth and become independent. 

All applications are viewed on an individual basis.

Admissions for the Independence Academy 

Admissions Process 

At Independence House Academy, we are excited to welcome young adults (ages 18–25) with disabilities who are ready to embark on a journey toward greater independence. Our transitional program is designed to provide the support, skills, and opportunities they need to thrive in adulthood.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to our admissions process:

Step 1: Initial Inquiry

  • Start by completing our online inquiry form, where you can share your interest and basic information about your young adult’s needs and goals.
  • Our admissions team will review your submission and contact you to schedule a conversation. 
  • If you have already spoke to Laura, Shep or Rebecca and feel the IHA is the right place for young adult, please skip to step 3.  

Step 2: Information Session

  • Attend a virtual or in-person information session to learn more about our program, meet staff members, and ask any questions.
  • We encourage parents, guardians, and the applicant to participate in this session.

Step 3: Application Submission

Complete the official application form, which includes:

  • Personal and family details.
  • Medical and psychological evaluations.
  • Educational records IEP, behavioural plan etc.
  • A statement of interest or goals (completed by the applicant or with assistance).

Step 4: Interview and Assessment

  • Once the application is reviewed, our admissions team will schedule an interview and assessment with the applicant.
  • This step helps us understand the individual’s strengths, needs, and goals, as well as how our program can best support them.
  • Parents/guardians may also be interviewed to provide additional insights.

Step 5: Decision Notification

  • After the interview and assessment, our admissions team will carefully review all materials.
  • Applicants will be notified of their admission status within 2-4 weeks of the interview.

Step 6: Enrolment

Accepted applicants will receive a welcome packet with:

  • Enrolment forms.
  • Program details and expectations.
  • A checklist of items to prepare before the program begins.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, candidates must:

  • Be between 18 and 25 years old.
  • Have a diagnosed disability and require support in transitioning to adulthood.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to participate in a structured program designed for personal and skill development.
  • Be able to engage in group activities with appropriate support.
  • All applications are reviewed on an individual basis.
